A Day Trip To the Singapore River

By: Jolene and Clare

Stepping out from the cold air of the bus into the hot afternoon sun , we truged towards the Singapore River . Having to walk in groups in 2's or more , me and my partner started wandering around snapping photos away . As we all know , the Singapore River is situated at the Central District Area(Shenton Way) . The area was very busy , office women and men were walking hurridly in formal clothing with a serious look on their faces .
As me and my partner walked by the river , we saw many sculptures of the past , it was almost like experiencing history again and making it come true . There were many sculptures for example , First Generation nest to Fullerton Hotel and another sculptures ,Bird next to UOB plaza II .
There were also many shop houses , each painted with a assortment and variety of colours . There weren't many people , the people whom were there were the westerners , sitting by the river with a beer mug enjoying the breath taking view of the river . But i guess there will be more people in the night .
What Singapore River used to be was the Old Port of Singapore , it was the life blood of the colony , the trade artery , the centre of commercial activity the heart of entrepot trade, the vessel of importance, the capillaries of life and the place which was frequented by the secret societies, the swaylos (Cantonese for coolies who worked on a boat) and the coolies who worked for the phillantrophies Tan Tock Seng at Ellenborough Market and the towkay (Hokkien for business owner) Tan Kim Seng who was busy filling his godown with the riches of the East.  The Old Port is now a famous district in singapore for tourist and office people besides Orchard Road . The Singapore River is also going to be one of Singapore's reservoirs and part of out water supply besides the other reservoirs in Singapore .
